Current stage: research and concept development. Numadelic has no commercially available products and is not taking orders. What this means

Applications under development

These are application opportunities for VIVO research. They are not products. Numadelic does not sell anything, take orders or quote prices.

First application concept: the river-stone washbasin

Naturally rounded Himalayan river stones are the main material example. The idea is to keep the stone’s organic outside and machine a smooth bowl into it, shaped for each stone.

  1. Concept visualization: a naturally rounded brown river stone with pale banding.

    Naturally rounded river stone

Smooth, irregular and individual. Not a quarried block.

  2. Concept visualization: the stone with scan lines across it and length and width markers.

    Material assessment

Measure outline, size and the material information that matters.

  3. Concept visualization: a wireframe model fitted to the stone's outline.

    Digital model

A computer representation of this one stone.

  4. Concept visualization: proposed bowl outline with a wall margin on the stone.

    Customised washbasin design

Position and size the bowl for this stone and this request.

  5. Concept visualization: tool-path loops inside the bowl outline and a simple tool indicator.

    Proposed machining operations

Plan the cuts. The tool shown is illustrative only.

  6. Concept visualization: the finished-basin concept with natural outer surface and a polished bowl.

    Conceptual finished washbasin

Outer form preserved, inner bowl machined and polished.

No two stones are the same

Himalayan river stones come in greys, charcoals, browns, creams, muted greens, rusty reds and banded mixtures. Choose a colour family to see an illustrative stone and a washbasin concept that keeps that stone’s own outline.

Orders are not being accepted and nothing here can be configured or bought. This is a way to explain the idea.

Other applications VIVO research could address

The long-term aim is customised manufacturing from naturally variable or irregular materials. Each of these is a research opportunity. None is a product.

Customised stone washbasins

The first application concept described above.

Concept

Stone architectural elements

One-off pieces shaped to a design from the stone available.

Opportunity

Decorative and functional stone products

Small objects and fittings where each piece is unique.

Opportunity

Custom-shaped material components

Parts cut from irregular stock to a specified form.

Opportunity

Irregular casting processing

Finishing castings whose geometry varies from piece to piece.

Opportunity

Material-aware machining

Process planning that responds to measured material variation.

Opportunity

Low-volume customised manufacturing

Making one-offs and small batches without custom tooling each time.

Opportunity

Other heterogeneous workpieces

Any workpiece whose shape or material differs from piece to piece.

Opportunity

What would have to be true

A washbasin that looks plausible in an illustration still has to be a good product. These are questions the research must answer with evidence, subject to engineering feasibility and testing.

  • Structural soundness. Hidden cracks and weak layers in natural stone must be found or avoided, and the basin must hold up in use.
  • Safe, usable form. Wall thickness, bowl shape, surface finish, sealing and drainage need to meet the relevant standards and installation practice.
  • Yield and cost. The approach only matters commercially if enough stones turn into good products at a workable cost. That has not been measured.
  • Responsible sourcing. Collecting stone from river beds is regulated, and rules vary by state and location. Any real programme must use lawfully and sustainably sourced material.
  • Repeatable process. Machining natural stone to a polished finish needs proven tools, parameters and fixtures.
